Do you want to learn Spanish and get to know Guatemala in a trip of
only one month? Then the Traveling Classroom is a must. Besides the
daily Spanish classes during four weeks in four different places we
have organized a large number of excursions which will attract even
the most active traveler.
Transportation between places is by collective mini busses which are normally
only used by tourists. Therefore the transport will be quick and
safe. In three places you will stay at a
guest family where you will receive three meals per day (except on
Sundays) and you will have your own room. On Sunday you can eat in a
nice local restaurant. There are also
9 nights in a hotel included: at the Pacific coast in
Monterrico and in a very nice jungle lodge at the river bank of the
‘Rio Cahabón’ where you will river raft. On the days with hotel stay
meals are not included except at the Mexican party at the end of the
weekend in the jungle. During this trip you learn Spanish, will
experience the local Indian culture and you will see the fascinating
nature of Guatemala.
The
trip visits the following places:
|
Antigua

A picturesque small town, once the capital of
Guatemala, with loads of relics of the colonial period
|
Panajachel

An
Indian village at the fascinating lake ‘Atítlan’ surrounded
by three volcanoes.
|
Coban / Lanquin
and Semuc Champey

A
less known village in the countryside and river rafting on
the ‘Rio
Cahabón’ near Lanquin.
|
Monterrico
A very laidback fishermen village at the
Pacific coast
|

You
will visit a project where turtles are protected, you’ll learn the
first steps of Salsa, and will get a shot of adrenaline during the
climb to the summit of the volcano Pacaya, river rafting and
descending on a Zipline at the canopy of the jungle. More relaxing
social activities are added too; you’ll go for instance to a live
band and see a movie in a hip lounge
café in Antigua. The week in Monterrico will be ended by a camp-fire
at the beach. This is just a part of the activities and don’t forget
that you will be able to have a simple conversation in Spanish after
this 4 week program.
The
journey
The
trip follows, in this order, these places: Antigua, Panajachel, Cobán /
Lanquín and Monterrico. The tour has a 4 week cycle; you can arrive
every Saturday and start your trip in the place where the tour is at
that moment. Although arriving in Guatemala in the weekend the tour
starts in Antigua is the easiest and cheapest (you also can arrive on
Sunday); in that case there won’t be need of an extra night in Antigua
after arriving and a transfer the
next day to the place where the tour is that week. Click to
see where the tour is at the moment you would like to join
here. Antigua is close to the airport of Guatemala
City and the transfer from the airport to Antigua is inclusive. Do
you want to start in another place then Antigua then there
will be a surcharge of $30
for the extra hotel night in Antigua and the extra transfer to the
place where the tour is held that week.
There is no transfer included from
the last place of your classes because you might want to stay there
a few more days or have planned to travel on your own after the
tour. In case you do want a transfer to Antigua because you fly out
of Guatemala City a (few) day(s) later we can arrange a transfer to
Antigua and 1 or more nights in a hotel and a transfer to the
airport with collective minibus ($7) or private shuttle ($30).

The
Spanish classes
You
will receive private Spanish tuition of 4 hours a day, in total 76
hours. In Cobán you will have only 4 days of classes of 4 hours
because we took an extra day for the most spectacular part of the
trip: river rafting on the river Cahabón in the jungle of Guatemala.
At every school you’ll have another teacher but your level of
Spanish will be passed on to the teacher at the next school. This
way continuity of your classes will be secured.
